The past few weeks it has been pretty cold. Not so much for us burrito boys, but for our friends who start the day at 5:30 or so to try to find work.
Folks walk through the snow or find any way the can to get to find work. It’s a little difficult to get there so early, especially as the thermometer drops to -8F.
The cold hurts twice…once because jobs seem to be scarce and secondly, well, its cold. Care of your feet and hands is really important. Wet socks can freeze your feet; some of our friends use newspaper liners to soak up the moisture. One of our friends had a nice pair of newer insulated boots that split open on the heel a few days into the job. Its challenging because he didn’t have money to replace them and working such long hours makes it difficult to return them for a replacement, which he eventually was able to do
I take so much for granted. So many of my challenges seem small compared to what my burrito friends go through every day. I’m proud of what these folks have taught me. They are courageous, hardworking folk, disciplined in their pursuit of a daily paycheck. I’m learning so much from them and am grateful.
